Name: Charlene Foss
Major: Behavioral Health Studies
What inspired your decision to pursue a career change and enroll in this program?
I always knew I wanted to work in the career of helping and working with others, especially children and adolescents. However, juggling college and a new baby at nineteen was difficult to maintain so I chose to put school on hold to focus on my family. Now, 14 years later, I have laid a solid foundation for my family so it felt like the right time to pursue my education so that I can work in the behavioral health field.
What are your expectations from this program in terms of aiding your career transition?
Enrolling in this program has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. I feel like my teachers are providing me with the knowledge I need to be successful in my chosen field. Additionally, the support and guidance from my professors and advisor have been instrumental to my success.
Can you share any hurdles you have faced while transitioning careers and how you have tackled them?
Although this is a wonderful time in my life to come back to school, I am still a full-time mom so balancing family, work, and school has presented its share of challenges. However, I have surprised myself with my ability to effectively manage my time and responsibilities so balancing everything hardly seems like a challenge at all!
Have you experienced any moments of uncertainty regarding your career change? If so, what drove you to persevere?
No, I have not encountered any doubts or uncertainties regarding my decision to change my career. My classes have only made me more excited for a new career and I cannot wait for it to become my reality.
What is your envisioned role or position post-graduation?
My ideal role involves working within a school environment, providing guidance and support to children and adolescents as they navigate challenges both at home and in school so that they can be successful.
Can you tell us what you like about YCCC and your experience at the college?
Everyone is so friendly and accommodating at YCCC! My classes are engaging and fun with content that will ensure my success after graduation in my career. The flexibility to choose between online and in-person classes is fantastic for my schedule and the support and encouragement from advisors and professors is outstanding.
Any advice for people thinking about coming back to school?
My advice for people thinking about coming back to school is to just do it! I am much more mature and take my classes and assignments more seriously than I would have at 19. You are never too old to go back to school and get a degree so you can have your dream career. If you are thinking about going back to school do not let doubts or fear hold you back, let this be your sign that you can do it. It is never too late to be the person you want to be!
